UNDERSTANDING FASCIA
WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT AFFECTS YOU
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
About Fascia
Fascia is the thick & thin white connective tissue made of collagen that surrounds & holds every organ, blood vessel, bone, nerve, fiber & muscle in place throughout the body. It’s almost as sensitive as skin due to extensive nerve endings. 98% of the body is covered in fascia and it makes up 20% of your total body weight. It connects all the soft tissue that is you, to your bones dictating how much you can move & protecting you from over extension.
Healthy fascia is flexible and slippery, allowing muscles & organs to glide smoothly past each other, but trauma, inflammation, lack of movement & dehydration can cause it to rope up, harden & adhese to each other much like spaghetti left in hot water unstirred.
Fascia is pliable and composed of about 70% water so it stores the vibrational energy of our emotions, stress & physical traumas. If dehydrated, it becomes stiff, sticky & less pliable leading to reduced mobility, chronic pain, adhesion formation and nerve compression.
Drinking plenty of water with proper electrolytes (trace minerals necessary for nerve conduction) are essential to help fascia become soft again. The manual manipulation of warm massage helps reform fascia & assists the emotional energy stored in it to also be released reducing anxiety & physical restrictions.
Stretching, yoga & breathwork also helps free fascia.
Successful fascial reformation takes place when the fascia is manipulated at least every 3 days. It takes a long time to form scar tissue and adhesions, so fascia holds this memory and will continue to return to its unhealthy position unless otherwise encouraged to re-form. Massage, chiropractic, stretch, water, movement, heat & breath all work in concert to release & reform fascia. Depending on the situation, scar tissue can start to break down, release & reform in as little as 4 weeks. A massage can help you start to feel relief immediately & continually in your fascia reforming process.
Chiropractic adjustments can also help relieve fascia. When a bone anywhere in the body is out of place (even slightly) then the fascia will tighten in order to keep us from slipping even more out of place (as It’s protecting us from further injury). A chiropractic adjustment helps encourage our bones back to their original healthy position. Fascia will get this signal and soften. Cin highly recommends chiropractic as a base therapy to compliment massage & stretch therapy.
Chiropractic can be done before or after a massage. If a person is in intense pain, a chiropractic adjustment can be best before the massage as the most intense situations can often be a bone slightly out of place known as subluxation.
